A driver towing a flatbed trailer on Interstate 40 near Vega didn’t know one of the vehicles on the trailer had $677,000 worth of cocaine hidden inside of it.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report, a DPS trooper stopped the driver Thursday to conduct an inspection. He was driving a 2013 Chevrolet pickup truck and traveling east. During the inspection, the trooper found more than 11 pounds of cocaine. DPS Criminal Investigations Division responded to assist the trooper with the investigation, and the CID agents determined the driver didn’t know the illegal drugs were inside the vehicle.

CID special agents, with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration, conducted a follow-up investigation that led to the arrest of five people in Michigan. Agents also seized two weapons and a large amount of currency, the DPS report said. The illegal drugs were allegedly being transported from Phoenix to Ferndale, Michigan.
