AMARILLO, TX – Dumas Intermediate is among five schools in the Texas Panhandle that will soon advance their educational efforts in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with grants from Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS), the managing and operating contractor for Pantex.

This month, CNS awarded five $1,000 grants for STEM activities in the classroom. Through these STEM grants, the company says it is helping develop Pantex’s future workforce. Grants were awarded to the following schools and projects:

  • Dumas Intermediate, for conduction, coding, and creating activities;
  • Highland Park Elementary, hovercrafts;
  • Ridgecrest Elementary, STEAM (science, technology, art, and math) Lab;
  • Rogers Elementary, coding; and
  • White Deer Elementary, snap circuit kits.

CNS announced the grant opportunities in recognition of Engineers Week in February. A total of 15 submissions were evaluated in March by a panel of volunteer engineers at Pantex. The group carefully reviewed all the applications and narrowed the impressive list down in order to recommend the five winners.

“Having an opportunity to offer these grants to our local educators was a great way to help encourage STEM education in our future workforce,” said Darla Fish, Community and Educational Outreach coordinator at Pantex.

DUMAS, TX – Jalila Chairez homered and tossed a complete-game victory to help the Dumas Demonettes roll past the Dalhart Lady Wolves, 25-3, Tuesday in Dumas.

The sophomore went 3-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate, and racked up eight strikeouts in only five innings to earn the win.

The Demonettes put the game out of reach early with a 10-run opening frame. Junior first baseman Melaney Granados started the offensive fireworks with an RBI single up the middle to plate Hannah Hernandez, and Briana Vargas highlighted the big inning with a two-run blast.

Arguably one of the top sluggers in the Panhandle region, the corner infielder is 46-for-73 (.630) with 39 runs scored, 58 RBIs, 10 doubles, a triple, and eight long balls heading into district play next week.

Dumas (16-6) added a run in the second to push the lead to 11-0, but Dalhart rallied for three scores the following inning. However, the Demonettes plated 14 unanswered runs over the next two frames to clinch the mercy-rule victory.

Freshman Jessa Fry posted three hits, two runs, and four RBIs for a Dumas squad that has averaged nearly 22 scores over the last two outings.

Hernandez finished with a pair of hits and three runs, and Sania Reyes tripled and drove home five scores.

Cami Velasquez collected two hits and an RBI, while Amery Casanova and Aaliyah Garcia tallied a hit and combined for two runs.

Briana Vargas and Sania Reyes both went deep, and every batter in the starting lineup registered a hit.
